Telling the Tour de Yorkshire story

With just over a day to go before the Tour de Yorkshire (TDY) enters South Yorkshire there’s a been a strange sense of calm in the Comms office today. That’s not to say it’s not been busy, it’s just that everything feels like it’s slotting into place.

The thing to remember about an event as exciting as this, is that it’s something that happens on top of the day job. I’ve experienced some of the best and worst of times in the role so far over the last few months and I’ve seen colleagues and friends go through the same.

We’ve come through it though, as a team, and I truly think it’s made us all stronger.

On the day itself we’ll be putting into a action an ambitious plan to cover locations all over the borough of Doncaster across six teams, using mobile devices, portable wifi hotspots, multiple social networks, live video and several kind volunteers. What could possibly go wrong…?

Aside from batteries dying, mobile networks being overloaded and the possibility of people dropping out last minute, we’ll be doing our very best to make sure we capture the essence of the Tour de Yorkshire spirit already being demonstrated by local communities in the borough.

The planning process itself has been an exciting (albeit, stressful) process so I’m really looking forward to seeing it all come together on the big day now.

If you want to see the events unfold, make sure you follow the Doncaster Council TDY twitter account this Saturday. It’s also worth checking out the facebook page too.

They’ve already become an absolute hotbed of cracking community-driven content packed with pretty pictures and videos — social networks at their very best. We’ve had all sorts of submissions including this little gem from local youngsters Lukas and Frida:

We’ll be dabbling with some Facebook Live video/Periscope, Vines, Snapchat (mydoncaster) and instagram too.

The beauty of this event is that it’s a chance for some really talented colleagues to flex their creative muscles and do themselves proud.

I can’t personally can’t wait to see how they tell their story of the Tour de Yorkshire on Saturday.

Now, fingers crossed for good weather! 🌞
