Good article Chris, that one slide really did it for me too. A title of Integrated and then use of the mighty Venn diagram to show “integratedness” between State and Non-State via an overlap of that messy Hybrid. And then we just ditch the ugly duckling and stick to the 2 things we’re comfortable with. But Hybrid isn’t just a cherry picking of features from each side of a “Continuum”, with a hopeful cherry picking of solutions from the same side as the problem.

Warfare is dynamic and chaotic. It is non linear by it’s very nature and thus the combination of features of 2 extremes, State and Non-State, will always result in something unique and far more complex than the sum of its parts. Complexity and Uniqueness are hideous things to combine (might make a good diagram though) and perhaps that’s why we struggle so much with even talking about this particular seam. Especially when it’s right up the guts of our Integrated Approach.
