Tryouts

Last Monday marked the day I dread most during basketball season. The first day of tryouts. It’s not because I was worried about making the team or not, but because of the conditioning. Every year the conditioning for tryouts is incredibly rigorous. I think coach does it to weed out those who are not seriously committed to the team. While I do see his reasoning, it does not make it any easier. I run more in the 1st day of tryouts than in the 364 days of the year prior. However, the first day is not the worst. The first day everyone’s energy is way up because it’s the start of the season. The second day is the real killer. We run just as much as the first day, but the adrenaline has worn off and soreness has already started to set in. Although it is not my favorite part of the season, I realize that the conditioning in tryouts is a necessary evil. It is the first step towards success. It sets the tone that in order to achieve success, we have to work hard. Most importantly, tryouts let me know that the season has arrived and it’s time to set my sights on the Civic Center.
