Tips for Staying Safe On Your Scooter

Spring has sprung in Salt Lake City and across the U.S. With temperatures warming up, more people will be using their scooters on roadways.

The safety principles of riding a scooter, are similar to those of riding a motorcycle. Whether you’re a new rider or seasoned, it is important to practice these safety tips during the 2016 spring and summer seasons to avoid an auto accident and the need for a lawyer.

Esurance says, first and foremost get to know your scooter. “Riding a scooter is going to take some getting used to. The more you practice, the more experienced (and safe) you’ll become. We suggest reading through your owner’s manual to become familiar with the parts and controls on your scooter, as well as maintenance schedules.”

Second, get to know the laws in your area for motorcycles and scooters. Depending on the type of scooter you own and what type of speed inhibiters, if any, are on your vehicle you may be limited to specific roadways. If your scooter has inhibitors that prevent minimum speed limits on Salt Lake City freeways — avoid these areas and stick to residential street traffic — to prevent an auto accident and a call to your lawyer.

Next, Esurance suggests taking a motorcycle or scooter safety course. These courses are usually offered by local DMVs and help riders get used to driving, braking and obeying traffic laws on a scooter.

Allstate suggests getting the right protective gear. Salt Lake City law requires helmets for riders under 17 years of age. Although the law does not require scooter riders 18 years of age and older to wear a helmet, it is strongly encouraged due to the added vulnerability of these riders.

The insurance provider says the right gear also includes wearing reflective clothing to avoid an auto accident during low light conditions and the need for a personal injury lawyer. Additionally, have a good knowledge of your blind spots and be aware of other drivers who don’t often see scooters or motorcycles.

Riders in Salt Lake City and nationwide should always be scanning the road for potential hazards and checking for other motor traffic. “Be completely vigilant at all times, constantly scanning the road with your eyes. Practice recognizing obstacles that might obstruct your view of other motorists, as well as obstacles that might block another motorist’s view of you,” says Esurance.

Overall — use common sense — wear protective clothing, get insurance, follow traffic laws and stay alert. Your diligence on the road will keep you and others safe from an auto accident and the need for a lawyer.
