Our Posture in Peril: Why Does My Neck Hurt So Much?

Three months ago I read an article about the danger of our neck and back posture in a digital age and decided to do something about it.

“Holy sh*t!” I said never imagining that,

The way we often hold our phones can add up to 45-60lbs of strain on our neck
(about 4–6 bowling balls on-top of your head).

But smartphones are awesome, and its not like anyone is going to give up checking out their friends’ snaps on Snapchat, swiping through Tinder for a date, or finding an answer on the go through Google Assistant, to improve their posture (right?).

So I asked, “do I have to decide between a life accelerating towards painful hunchback, forward head posture and using this magical machine which improves my life everyday?”.

So I’ve got to choose between my smartphone and my posture huh…?

Of course not.

Some of the most interesting ideas come from problems that people don’t realize they have, until they become aware and then can’t stop worrying about it.

This was exactly my case, so I wanted to create an app to help myself build the habit of viewing my phone to eye level, and guess what? It worked!

I always admired how effortless blue light filter apps (such as f.lux and Twilight) work for people but at the same time provide such incredible value.

So I made Posture, an Android app that runs in the background of your phone and monitors how you hold it. If you forget your neck posture or are holding your phone in a risky position too long the app reminds you to be mindful of your neck bring your phone back to eye-level.

Caring about your posture is more than just “being healthy”. Your posture expresses your confidence, personality and how awesome you really are.
