No one doubts the value of good writing. Ernest Hemingway was one of the best fiction writers of all time. Some would argue that he was the best fiction writer. He told good stories, and we wouldn’t have wanted him to do anything else. Hemingway would have been wasted as a truck driver.

As churlish and edgy as this is going to sound, I think we would’ve been better off if ol’ Ernie’s passion turned out to be truck driving instead of writing. In fact, I’ll go even further and say that in my opinion, he was one of the worst things that happened to writing as an artform in the 20th Century. You could even say that he plowed his truck straight through it.

A lot of the blame for the stylistic stagnancy of contemporary writing can be laid squarely on his shoulders.
