The Cost of Helping My Sister Buy a House

My husband and I thought we found The One when we were househunting — it had some quirks but seemed amazing. We brought our parents to see it a day or two later, after it had rained. The dehumidifier in the basement was full, so the ceiling had started turning green, you could see water marks where the new windows were letting in moisture, and we saw the neighbor kick at his dog. We found a much better house shortly afterwards, but I don’t think I’ll forget the embarrassment of bringing our parents to such a terrible house that we were so excited about.
