This calls to mind the story of the prince who, seeking Enlightenment, studied with a famous Zen master for ten years.
At last, he told the master thats he was going to return home in failure. The master convinced him to stay for another ten years.
After ten more years with no result, the prince made ready to leave. Again, the master asked him to stay for 5 more years.
Finally, after the five years, the prince announced he was leaving.
The master told him “Stay two more weeks. If by then you have still not achieved your goal, you never will, and so may as well kill yourself.”
On the third day, the prince achieved enlightenment.
