FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, February 24, 2017

Washington, DC — Rock the Vote President Carolyn DeWitt issued the following statement in response to protections for transgender students being rescinded on Wednesday:

“Once again, the actions of Attorney General Sessions and the President remind us that we cannot count on the White House to protect the rights of Americans who are most vulnerable.

“By eliminating protections for transgender students, this administration is recklessly endangering the lives of our young people. Ensuring safety to marginalized communities, especially in our schools, is a fundamental responsibility of our elected officials. This is not a partisan issue. This is an American issue.

“We stand firmly with equal rights advocates, and to any student or young person feeling powerless and alone right now, our message is clear: ‘You are seen. You are heard. You are valued. We will continue to fight for leadership that reflects the inclusive values of young Americans, who make up the largest and most diverse generation in our country’s history.”
