Up On the Marquee With Peter Allen
Throughout their 90-year history, the world-famous Rockettes have shared the stage — and unforgettable adventures — with many other world-famous personalities. They have appeared at such iconic events as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Super Bowl and on TV shows like America’s Got Talent and Night of 100 Stars. The Rockettes are taking a moment to reflect on their favorite stardust memories.
In 1982, Radio City Music Hall celebrated its 50thanniversary. In honor of this spectacular event, LIFE magazine organized a group photograph of everyone who was working at the hall at that time — from the wardrobe and stage crew to the front office staff and Grammy- and Academy Award- winning songwriter, Peter Allen — for a two-page spread in one of their issues.
Because we were such a large group, security stopped traffic along Sixth Avenue. While most of the crew was stationed in front of Radio City, they put four Rockettes on top of the marquee with Peter — and I was one of them.
While we were waiting to take the photo, we saw this sole limousine cruising down Sixth Avenue with a person sticking out of the sunroof; it was like something out of the movie Pretty Woman. As it was getting closer and closer, we were looking at each other wondering who it could be … and it was none other than Liza Minnelli (aka Peter Allen’s wife at the time).
She was waving left and right violently, hanging out of the sunroof and yelling, “Peter, I love you!” Peter just waved back at her, but it was so funny — we couldn’t stop laughing!
Leave it to good ol’ Liza to entertain us!
