Wonderful post. Absolutely fantastic information.
I’ve recently realized I too was starting with a product and THEN marketing which was a mistake. I actually wrote about my mistake as well https://www.medium.com/@rockstarcode/reach-your-first-and-biggest-obstacle-c5836cac4c22
So after you read Seth’s advice it seems rather obvious, but its really counter intuitive to how we start off. I know I certainly started from a product first approach, and I believe that’s because as consumers we are oblivious to the marketing efforts when they work well. When I go buy something I tend do think I did all the work. So its natural for us to assume the product IS the thing of value because that’s where we focus. We forget that something led us to choose that product to begin with, and that we actually didn’t buy the product but rather what the product does for us.
As a developer who’s first instinct is to build stuff, its specially problematic. I speak to a business friend of mine who offers the same advise, and likes to remind me this stuff should be at the forefront in my mind. Its obvious to her because she comes from that world. But for the rest of us, it takes alot of work and frustration to get to this starting point.
