Algeria’s history dates back to ancient times, when it was inhabited by Berber tribes. The Berbers were the original inhabitants of North Africa, and their culture and language still have a significant influence on Algerian society today. In the 7th century, Arab armies invaded Algeria and introduced Islam to the region. Over time, the Berbers converted to Islam and adopted Arabic as their language.
In the 16th century, Algeria came under Ottoman rule, and it remained under Ottoman control until the 19th century. During this time, the Ottomans built numerous fortifications and mosques throughout Algeria, and the country became an important center of Islamic scholarship and trade.
