Exploring the Roman Catacombs is an experience like no other. These underground burial chambers, carved out of soft volcanic rock, offer a glimpse into the fascinating history of Rome’s early Christians.

In this third day of our seven-day tour of Rome, we’ll take you on a journey beneath the city’s surface to uncover the secrets of the Roman Catacombs. So, grab your comfortable shoes, your sense of adventure, and let’s begin!

Roman Catacombs

Start your day off by exploring the underground tunnels of the ancient Roman Catacombs. These tunnels were used as burial chambers for early Christians and are filled with intricate frescoes and sculptures.

There are several catacombs to choose from in Rome, but the Catacombs of San Callisto and the Catacombs of Domitilla are two of the most popular. Both are easily accessible by public transportation or taxi.

Lunch in Trastevere

After exploring the catacombs, head to the Trastevere neighborhood for a leisurely lunch.

This bohemian area is filled with charming cafes and trattorias serving up authentic Roman cuisine. Try traditional dishes like carbonara, amatriciana, and cacio e pepe, and wash it all down with a glass of locally produced wine.

Appian Way

Spend the afternoon exploring the Appian Way, one of the most important ancient Roman roads.

This historic route is lined with ancient ruins, tombs, and catacombs, and is a great way to experience the city’s rich history. You can rent a bike or join a guided tour to explore the area.

A Splendid Night at Testaccio

For dinner, head to Testaccio, a trendy neighborhood known for its lively nightlife and delicious food.

This area is particularly famous for its street food, including supplì (fried rice balls), panini filled with slow-cooked meats, and gelato. You can also find traditional Roman trattorias serving up hearty pasta dishes and local wine.

The Most Beautiful Way to Close Your Day in Rome

After dinner, head to the Monti neighborhood for a nightcap.

This trendy area is filled with lively bars and cafes, and is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Grab a cocktail or a glass of wine and soak up the atmosphere.

Day 3 in Rome was about exploring the city’s rich history and culture other than the well-known landmarks.

From the underground catacombs to the ancient Appian Way, there’s no shortage of historic landmarks to explore in Rome. And of course, no trip to Rome would be complete without indulging in some authentic Roman cuisine.

Bonus Tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket or sweater when exploring the catacombs, as they can be chilly and damp.
  • If you’re renting a bike to explore the Appian Way, be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen, as it can get quite hot during the day.
  • Consider visiting the Catacombs of San Sebastiano or the Catacombs of Priscilla if you’re looking for a less crowded alternative to the Catacombs of San Callisto and the Catacombs of Domitilla.
  • Testaccio is particularly lively on weekends, so plan your visit accordingly if you’re looking for a vibrant atmosphere.
