My Career in Design

Hello Folks,

I am Rohit Shrestha. I am a graphic designer, a UI/UX designer and a front-end developer currently exploring the world of web design and development at YoungInnovations. I am always on the lookout for inspirations, willing to work hard for things that are worth it and I crave to be surrounded by those who bring out the best in me. No offense but I tend to consider myself a creative person. It didn’t happen in a day, it took more than just a year or two to build that attitude. And that’s my journey to what I am right now.

They say your home is a best place to learn. And I’ve been lucky in that case. As a kid, I was highly mesmerized by the computers and I got ample opportunities to learn a great deal of creating designs in computer with the help from my cousins. My curiosity lead me to learn basics of Adobe Photoshop from YouTube tutorials.

After I completed my high school, I started with the print design work at DigiScan. DigiScan is a printing press company. I used to work there designing business cards, company logos, posters, brochures, annual reports, magazine and other printing related designs.

At DigiScan, we used to design with Adobe Pagemaker. And working with Adobe Pagemaker was tough for all us working there as it lacked many features. I could not stop exploring new tools and hence I found Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator. These are one of the best tools I have used for designing. I learned about Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator and started to using both. Most of the colleagues, at first, criticized me for using them. But I reached out and helped them learning the tools. And viola, they loved it and started designing using the tools as they realized that the tools helped them to work easily and quickly.

During my tenure at DigiScan, my senior, Ananda Maharjan, was my inspiration. He always motivated me and helped me in learning the layout designs, colors and tips/tricks etc. I worked there for 4 years and I will always be thankful to him and others who taught me and motivated me.

After leaving DigiScan, I joined a multinational company working mostly on web development projects. Since I was always interested to work on web development and seeing my colleagues working on a few projects, my interest and curiosity grew. So I bugged them with many questions and that’s how I stepped into the basics of web development. They were very helpful and suggested me to visit w3Schools website to get started with. I could not stop myself exploring the website which is a useful one to learn from scratch.

For months, I explored and learned and along with it, I learned about new trends, too, and soon started implementing my learning. During this time, I was searching for software companies to apply in and I learned about YoungInnovations through Facebook. I applied, was selected and I am still continuing my web development journey here.

YoungInnovations always has this pleasant environment and my colleagues, here, are innovative and who always seeks to learn new ideas and tools. I am always elated to work here. I started my work on web design and development. I learned a lot about UI/UX design and front-end development. Thanks to my senior anjhero (Anjan Shrestha) who taught me a lot on designing for web and has been motivating me to become better in what I do.

Earlier, I used to make designs in Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop is a great designing tool. I had designed several websites using it but one of the thing that I didn’t like is that I have to make layout for every single page of a website. Also, the file size of the design is huge.

After we switched to Mac, we used Sketch App (which is only for Mac). This app is the easiest and small sized design software that I have ever used. With this app, I easily learn to transfer my ideas in a matter of hours into designs, and apparently stopped using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Fireworks for most digital design task. I became efficient in my work by using the app. There are many resources and plugins available for this app. Among all the plugins, Craft is my best because it helps to design with real data. Nowadays, most of the designers use Sketch App where they could design more productively.

This place has been an excellent platform for me to learn and understand more about designing that I was not aware of. It has been four years since I have been happily working at YoungInnovations and trust me it didn’t feel like I have already spent four years of my journey here.

In this journey, I had learned a lot from many, got opportunities to work on best projects, upgraded my skills. I feel with all of my past experiences and support from my colleagues and friends, I will continue my journey which I am in love with.

Thanks for reading it, folks!!!
