Take time to have fun…

500 Words a day challenge — Day 8

Wouldn’t you know it…Fun just sneaks right up on you if you let it. Last night I had an experience that reminded me that in our busy lives, we have to be purposeful to have time to have fun…

It was a simple thing, but it reminded me that when I’m out of balance in my life, I’m not a very good father, husband, or professional. Fun does something to you…it loosens stress, it loosens your smile, it allows you to hear and listen to those important around you.

For me it was as simple as “hey Dad, can we go to open gym time and shoot some hoops?”

So what happened over the next hour and a half was, profound for me.

Here we are 45 year old Dad with 7 year old son shooting hoops. Laughing and joking, pretending to play a game. It was so refreshing. I looked around the gym and I was saddened. Over 70% of the parents there, were just sitting around the edges, on their technology and not even looking up to see the fun their kids were having.

I was reminded of something last night. When I’m intentional about being their for those close to me, I’m intentional about loving them. It was amazing what a short little response from a 7 year old will do for your soul. As a Dad, I was happy and fulfilled in my soul. When you hear, “Dad that was the most fun I’ve had in a long time,” you pause and wonder…What have I been missing here…

Well I confess, I’ve been distracted and consumed with the next thing, whatever it is and have missed the opportunities to just pause and have fun. Those are the moments of time where my kids and wife know, I love them, I care for them, and they matter to me in my life.

I have a new commitment to my family now after last night…I’m going to pause and just have fun with them…I want them to know they are what I’m here for, not everything else in the life.

If you are in the same boat as me…distracted by life in general, feeling stressed with “everything” you have to get done…

Go shoot some hoops and don’t forget…leave your technology in the car. You never know fun might just sneak up and surprise you…

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
