If you believe scarcity will solve sustainability problems, I am sad to disappoint you. The markets are completely rife with externalities with respect to climate change and sustainable resource use. These are not properly taken into account in pricing, and the market mechanism has so far failed to (fully) correct this. Therefore, improving the functioning of markets to take our future into account is one of economic policy’s biggest tasks.
