Keeping Canadians Safe: Why Cannabis Legalization Is The Right Move

[Source]

Legalizing cannabis remains a hotly contested issue across the globe. Many regions around the world struggle with the stigma associated with cannabis use and fear legalization will equate to an increase in consumption rates for both the general public and youth, bringing with it unknown physical and mental health consequences. As a result, it is kept criminalized alongside hard drugs. A few countries, like Canada, are working towards embracing cannabis as a legal and controlled substance, acknowledging the positive impacts legalization can have as well as the shortcomings of prohibition.

We believe that legalization and regulation of cannabis is the best way to help keep cannabis consumers and the general public safe from the risks associated with its use, as well as provide better exposure to its health benefits.

As mentioned in the video by In A Nutshell (Kurzgesagt), legalization of cannabis has significant benefits for the general population. It means greater access to funding for research, which in turn results in greater knowledge and education for the public about the potential risks of cannabis use, as well as the potential benefits, both of which can have significant lifelong impacts.

Legalization not only increases opportunities for awareness and education, it improves the government’s ability to keep the public safe through fact driven legislation. In the case of Canada, the rules and regulations as set out by Health Canada revolve heavily around public health and safety, with an emphasis on protecting youth. These measures include implementing standardized compliance regulations across the industry in regards to cultivation, distribution and selling of cannabis. As a result, Canadian cannabis consumers will have access to safer, higher quality cannabis that meets government health and safety standards.

Establishing government regulations within any industry is one challenge, enforcing them and ensuring industry compliance is another. Neither are easy and both require support and reliable information in order to be successful. At Rubikon Cannabis Blockchain Network (CBN), we’re using emerging blockchain technology to provide a seed-to-sale supply chain information system that goes beyond the compliance needs of the legalized Canadian Cannabis Industry to benefit consumers, cultivators, and regulators.

We’ve combined our unique RFID (hardware) technology with recent advancements in blockchain to better streamline compliance across the industry. Our RFID Trackbadges allow cultivator and personal information to be kept private, while our peer-to-peer blockchain network holds participating businesses accountable for their data input and upkeep, all while tracking cannabis through its lifecycle and creating more informed consumers.

The decision to legalize cannabis does not equal an endorsement of its use. Rather, we believe it symbolizes the government taking responsibility for keeping the public safe and informed. Ultimately, legalization and meaningful regulation enables individuals to make informed decisions about their cannabis, as well as provide greater freedoms to exercise this behaviour in a safe and regulated market.
