What’s Your Legacy?

When you’re thinking about your legacy, it’s easy to fall into a trap where you begin to get self-conscious. You start navel-gazing, trying to assess your legacy, trying to figure out whether you’re making an impact or not. It forces you to think about what other people think of you.
Next thing you know, you’re worried about things like:
- Do people like me?
- What’s my image in the marketplace?
- Am I being a good leader?”
Do you see the problem?
The problem is, this line of thinking sends you into this spiral of being self-focused. And you’ll never build a truly great legacy focused on yourself.
There’s a better way to build a legacy. In fact, your legacy should happen automatically. Because I believe your legacy is going to be much more powerful if it’s a byproduct. NOT the goal.
So how do you create a legacy without actually focusing on yourself or on even striving to create a legacy at all?
Simple. Focus on the people you can help… your current and future clients. Here’s what I mean…
Many gurus teach you to tell your story. They say tell your story about how you were down and out, found the secret, and then created a new life. Classic three-act play stuff.
But I don’t believe you need to or even should, do that. I never make my personal story a centerpiece of our marketing.
Because I don’t think the focus should be on me at all. Our sole focus should be on you and helping you achieve your goals. Everything we do, every decision we make is to help you get what you want.
So, if you are going to think about your legacy, I invite you to think about it in a very specific way…
Think about your legacy in terms of RESULTS and IMPACT on the lives of others. Here’s how you can start doing that right away:
#1 — START TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO IN TERMS OF THE OUTCOME YOU CREATE.
Let say, for instance, you’re a relationship coach and someone asks you, “What do you do?”
Your first instinct might be to answer the question as they ask it… to tell them what you do in terms of your job title. So, you might say, “I’m a relationship coach”.
Great. Those are a dime a dozen. There are relationship coaches, marriage counselors, marriage therapists, and more. You’re literally making yourself a diamond dozen because you’re talking about what you do in terms of your job title. Make sense? See why it’s hard to stand out?
That’s not what’s most effective. If you want to leave a legacy of results, position what you do in terms of the results that you get. For example, as a relationship coach, you might say…
“I help people whose marriages are falling apart put the pieces back together and rediscover the passion that they had when they first got together.”
Do you see how much more powerful that is? Notice how right out of the gate it completely sets up, hey, this is what this person really does. This is the outcome this person creates. It gives a very clear measure of success or failure. Your prospect doesn’t have to figure out what “relationship coach” means.
So ask yourself, what is the outcome your clients get from working with you?
Then, once you’ve nailed that answer…
#2 — CREATE AN OFFER THAT MATCHES YOUR OUTCOME
When our clients come to work with us, we help them create a fun, scalable coaching model. It doesn’t rely on blogging, or ascension models, or one on one coaching.
Instead, we teach them a strategy that is scalable in three ways…
… they can create as much income as they want,
… they can impact as many people as they want,
… and they can have as much freedom as they want.
Or, as we like to say, they can attract the right clients, at the right price, anytime they want. For most of the people, we work with create some kind of an online group program priced between $3,000 and $10,000 or more.
The main teaching content is delivered weekly. And then there is a live portion like a weekly Q&A or help desk. And because you’re delivering that program online, you’ve gone something you can deliver from anywhere in the world with just a laptop and an Internet connection.
I know it seems too simple. But it works. That’s a simple model to create some leverage and some freedom while still having that legacy of results we’re talking about.
Plus, when your offer is set up to deliver the results you promise in your marketing, everything gets easier. Especially the next piece…
#3 — SELL WITH INTEGRITY
What does that mean? Well, what that means is having a sales process that actually works, enrolls people consistently, and gets them really clear on the outcome you’re going to deliver.
That’s pretty straightforward. Where too many people miss the boat on selling with integrity is that they sugar coat the work required.
Look, it is critical to be really transparent about the work that is going to take to get the outcome you promise.
The work required cannot be left unsaid. You need to let people know, upfront before you take their money that this process requires work.
Why? Because chance are, you are helping people create outcomes that are difficult. And I would say if you’re helping people create any life-changing outcome, it’s gonna be difficult. Maybe you’re helping people get into amazing shape, or fixing their relationship, or fixing their marketing or, or whatever it is…
All of those things are challenging.
All of those things take work.
All of those things take some grit.
So instead of trying to hide that and talk about how anybody can do this, and how it’s super easy blah, blah, blah….
Talk about the fact that it’s difficult. Be Upfront about it. Literally say:
“This is going to be hard. It takes work. You’re going to have to work your butt off. But guess what? I’m going to hold your hand every step of the way and give you a step by step strategy so that you don’t have to waste any more time.”
Here’s why this is so important…
The right clients, your ideal clients, they are willing to work. They KNOW it takes work. They just want help. They need a guide. You are that guide.
Just don’t BS people into following you. Because the people that come in thinking it’s going to be easy, they never get results. And they are a pain to work with. Being honest about the work required will repel those people and keep them out of your life.
Then, you get to focus on working with clients who will listen, act, and get results. That’s a very cool business to have.
So let’s recap…
One, people understand the outcome you provide. Two, you’ve got an offer that does an amazing job at providing it while still creating freedom and amazing income for you. And three, you’ve got a process where you’re selling it consistently.
Once you have those three things, everything is lined up. You’ve stacked the deck in your favor so that you can actually go out there and create that legacy of results.
Listen, if you can align everything in your in your in your company, from your marketing to your ads, to the way that you position yourself, to the way that you communicate, to the way that your programs are set up…
If everything is focused on getting an amazing result for your clients, then you’re way ahead of the game. And you’ll blow by your competition.
Because to be perfectly honest, most of your competitors are way too busy thinking about money. Or they’re way too busy thinking about being a celebrity. Or they’re way too busy thinking about being a big shot. And they forgotten the reason for any businesses existence in the first place is to help people get a specific outcome to a specific problem. Period.
