For all the continuing death and destruction that nuclear testing brought. It did eventually show to the nuclear powers the doomsday a nuclear war (even a limited one) would inflict, and led to MAD, a no-first-use policy from most major powers, and policies to limit the spread of nuclear weapons. That grim reality surely steadied Stanislav Petrov’s hand and others like him who prevented small mistakes becoming a nuclear war.
