Much similar to Vladimir Putin’s attitude, Beijing rather have Donald Trump as the US president.

I’m sure they would have preferred a Clinton presidency, but a politically weak one. A democrat as president and a republican controlled congress makes for a more divided and delayed opinion on actions. Trump as president might have acted more forcefully about Ukraine’s sovereignty with a republican controlled congress.

The unpredictability of Trump as a novice politician is more than worrying for both the Kremlin and China. Trump might be personally open to making a deal on Crimea, but his more hawkish advisers and others in congress could change that very quickly. Chinese military actions in the SCS and their currency manipulation makes them an easy target for those same people.

Then add to all that Trumps reported proclivity for missing intelligence briefings and a political misstep/miscalculation is inevitable.
