It would have been more of a vanity/propaganda carrier than anything else. How much free press and fear-mongering was doled out for the Kusnetsov sitting off of Syria. Talk of showdowns with the US or French carrier groups, or scaring them away from Syria’s shores. Those mig29s would have been safer launching from Latakia and would have carried more ordinance.

It’s all about the appearance of power and being a counterbalance to American sea power. Russia knows it’s not what it actually can do, but what the people/press think it can accomplish.
