A poem on letting go of home

I have to wonder
what Christopher Columbus’s parents said
when he left across the sea

Did they beg
for their little boy
to stay and watch their fields

Family’s all you’ve got
or so they said;
Family is

But forever was so long,
and life was so short,
and adventure called to him
for what seemed like

And so he set sail
to a world that was brand new
full of adventure
and mystery
and excitement.

And it lasted forever.

But how his mother cried
and filled the ocean
two times over,
longing for her boy
who left her
