White People Are A Little Too Damn Happy About Trevor Noah vs. Tomi Lahren

I haven’t watched the interview. Yet your argument is bizarre. We shouldn’t be civil to a hateful woman, we should be hateful! White people need to check their privilege! Don’t you see where this cycle doesn’t go anywhere?

Please tell me what you would have liked to hear Lahren verbally *say* that would have constituted a “valuing” of Noah’s life. If we really want racism to end, we need to start treating each other as if race doesn’t exist, not glorifying or making special privileges for one or the other. If there is such a thing as white privilege, there exists black privilege as well. Black people can say and do things that I can’t, because I would be a racist if I said or did those things. You can have a black television network. I can’t. Ideally, we should look beyond race and try to see people as just people .

It looks like you’ve done pretty well for yourself, having written articles at “The Smoking Section, Uproxx, With Spandex, The Guardian, Playboy, OffBeat Magazine”… I majored in English at a major college and had a great GPA, and I haven’t written articles in any magazine like that. Wouldn’t it burn you up for me to say that black privilege is what allowed you to do those things? I would be wrong to say that! So can’t you see how it angers white people for people to say that whites need to “check their privilege”? It implies that our accomplishments are due to privilege and not hard work.

As for the slavery undertone that exists in every race conversation — American slaves and slave owners are history. Your grandmother might have lived through slavery, but that doesn’t mean you did, nor does it necessarily mean that my grandmother was a slave owner. In fact, she lived in a hut with no running water, no electricity, with trees growing up through the floor. She had to walk for miles to get to work every day at a shoe factory that destroyed her back. People had it rough back then, not just black people. Sure, blacks had it worse in general. Let’s forget all that and look to the future.

On the topic of Black Lives Matter and how “black people should protest”: all I can say is that they *shouldn’t* burn down buildings that belong to black business owners. They shouldn’t burn down buildings at all, but talk about pointless! They *shouldn’t* block off streets and expect to not get run over. Neither should the “not my President” crowd.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
