Of course. I have and will never suggest that what games need is censorship! But the argument against censorship is often used to protect and defend offensive content. I think that the offensive content has a right to exist, but arguing that it should not be censored does not make it any less offensive, whether that be pointlessly violent, sexist, racist, or psychologically manipulative (I’m looking at you F2P design).
So while I believe passionately that games are protected speech, that doesn’t keep me from questioning games that run against my tastes or personal moral stance. I don’t think that all others will or should share those tastes or that stance, but I do think that any worthwhile design should be able to address my questions or concerns.
Mostly I want designers to think about the reasons behind their designs, and to be aware of their effects. And for players to be aware of the intent behind the games they play and the effects they have.
I personally know that I am affected by all the games I play, maybe the effects are slight, but they are cumulative… and I am neither a child or mentally unstable ;)
