I think you are right in that everything is connected on some level. There are clearly larger societal issues that are driving both the political arena and the games space. Each is a window into the other, all of them reflect the choices that we as a society and as gamers/game developers make.
With regards to games being a healthy outlet, I feel that as a gamer. It’s good to blow off steam and sometimes to get to act outside of the consequences of everyday life. At the same time I think that the argument that what we do in games does not matter is flawed. We are affected by the games we play and make, and in social games others are affected by our actions in those games. Those effects aren’t on the level of actions taken in the physical world, but neither are they meaningless :)
