NASA’s idea for a space station in lunar orbit takes humanity nowhere
Ethan Siegel

As someone who grew up in the 70s when it seemed NASA went tot the Moon every other week-and regarded Space:1999 as almost a documentary-I agree, go to the Moon, and by all means establish a colony there. There is no real point to a lunar space station.

I would add that it is a complete waste of time and money to try to go to Mars. It is completely unrealistic to think that any human could live in such confined isolation for two years, and any attempt would likely result in a sci-fi/horror story that we could watch unfold on social media with ten-minute delay. Until we have reduced the trip time to around two months-which is highly unlikely at best-a Mars shot is simply throwing away a few lives and billions of dollars.
