Caregivers Take Action at College Vista Nursing Home
Staffers of College Vista nursing facility in Eagle Rock, CA staged a protest outside the facility today calling on management to bargain in good faith and to continue to provide the employees and residents a safe, healthy, and dignified life.
The Sun-Mar corporation has failed to maintain contract standards and has been refusing to provide its workers with a living wage instead they’ve been insisting on making more front-line cuts to pay for unnecessary administrative costs that are already higher than the industry standard.
“I have dedicated more than 30 years of my life working at College Vista Post-Acute facility” Said Lourdes, a CNA at the facility, I love people, I love taking care of them and seeing the smiles I bring to their faces.
Right now our union SEIU Local 2015 is helping us to negotiate a contract, but the company Sun Mar is not bargaining in good faith.
The workers are represented by SEIU Local 2015 — a union of long-term caregivers — who have blamed the recent contract hold-up on Sun-Mar’s insistence on taking away safe staffing ratios from the contract. Safe staffing ratios dictate the number of clients an individual CNA can have and have been shown to be effective at reducing medical error and improving patient outcomes.
The workers state that removing safe staffing ratios will not only be the workers — who will have a substantially greater workload — but the patients of the facility who rely on the care provided by the CNA’s and may not be able to get the individualized attention that they presently receive.
“I am fighting with my co-workers for a fair contract that brings us dignity and respect, just like we show our patients everyday.” Said Lourdes.
The workers said that they will continue to bargain and hope that management comes to the table and that they negotiate a fair and reasonable contract.
