What It’s Like To Drive In India

And if you think this is crazy, Indian cities are TAME compared to Dhaka, Bangladesh…There, all the nice cars have wraparound steel rail bumpers (not unlike an off-road vehicle or police car) that are mounted about 10" away from the body of the car over the front and rear stock bumpers. All other vehicles are RAKED with little dings and scratches all along the sides, front and back. I think the rule in Bangladesh must be, you can drive as soon as you can reach the pedals…

I recall one time I was in a taxi in Dhaka on the freeway and suddenly my driver stopped in the middle of the road with no warning and we were rear-ended by a bus. The bus driver got out and was yelling at the driver in Bengali while I yelled at him in English, so he was getting it in both ears. He patiently waited it out and did not respond. After about 15mins of yelling, the bus driver got back into his bus and we were all on our way. While I got a bit of a whiplash from the experience, it was no worst than I had received in the U.S. a few times already in car accidents so, well, what to do?
