SGISD Professor Presents at APHA Conference

Assistant Professor Gillian MacNaughton attended the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association (APHA) this week in Denver. The theme this year was “Creating the Healthiest Nation: Ensuring the Right to Health.”

MacNaughton, an international human rights lawyer and a member of the newly formed APHA Human Rights Forum, has been researching the international human right to health for over ten years. She presented her paper (co-authored by Mariah McGill), “Progressively Realizing the Right to Health Care in Vermont,” on the panel “Right to Health Advocacy in the United States.”

Based on interviews with 30 leaders on health care reform in Vermont, MacNaughton and McGill documented and analyzed Vermont’s human rights-based approach to realizing universal health care. The study was funded by the World Health Organization and the Joseph P. Healey Research Grant from the University of Massachusetts.

The APHA panel was moderated by Assistant Professor Dabney Evans of the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, who is chair-elect of the Human Rights Forum.
