Upcoming Blocktime fix

Small bonus article for today about our upcoming update.

As you may have already seen, our real blocktime is a lot faster than our intended one and this is causing the creation of a lot of orphan blocks(that it’s this fast not that it’s different). This update will increase the blocktime which doesn’t look nice for miners but we promise that in the long run, and actually even the short run, it’s better for both the miners and the blockchain itself.

What’s happening right now?
Because the blocktime is so incredible fast there are many orphan blocks being created. These are blocks received by a node that does not have its entire ancestry (yet) and thus cannot be validated. Nodes keep such blocks in memory, while asking their peers to fill in the gap of their history. This can be quite an headache for miners. And we want to solve it.

We’ll solve the problem by increasing the blocktime. Although this will not make the chances for getting orphan blocks zero there will be a lot less and we hope that this makes the coin more usable.

Why is this better for the miners and the blockchain.

At the moment it’s possible that you are mining for nothing as you may mine blocks that later get invalid. This sucks and shouldn’t be the case. This not only makes the blockchain unnecessarily expensive it’s also a waste of time.

We are waiting with this update because it will require a hardfork and that will mean that exchanges and pools will have to redo all their work on the wallets. We don’t want to stress the pools and exchanges too much so will wait some time until we will bring the update to the blockchain. This also gives us some time to figure what the best future blocktime will be and maybe even include some other upgrades to the chain.
