SIPTU representatives have welcomed the decision of An Bord Pleanála to grant planning permission for an extension to the Tailings Pond at New Boliden Tara Mines, County Meath, which secures the long term future of the facility.

SIPTU Organiser, John Regan, said: “The decision of An Bord Pleanála regarding this development is one that is greatly welcomed by workers at the mine and the surrounding communities. Over recent months, SIPTU representatives communicated with many elected representatives to ensure they understood the importance of this planned extension for our members in the mine and businesses associated with it.

“The confirmation that An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission in relation to the development means that workers in Tara Mines have job security for many years into the future. The local economy in the North East area and beyond will greatly benefit from the continued functioning of the mine facility which has been secured by this decision.”

He added: “The importance of this decision cannot be overstated. The life of the mine’s operating plan is until 2023, the extension to the Tailings Pond will extend its operation well beyond that date. It is now expected that investment in the mine, to which New Boliden is already committed, will commence immediately.”
