Rapidito.

Calling Justin Bieber’s antics anything short of racist is wrong. CW- Language, racism.

I don’t know how it happened, and as a rule of thumb I do not question people of color artists when they face the choice of having to work with white pop artists. Sometimes in the industry you do what you gotta do. As an artist imagining what is like to be given the opportunity to break through a whole new audience and enchanting them with an introduction to my work sounds exhilarating but costly. I try not to judge and support POC artists as much as I can. It is worth mentioning that in sickness and in health Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s music have been an integral part of my life since Middle and High school respectively and as a fan of course I want to give this a chance even if the song features golden fuckboi of our generation. At least he tried to learn Spanish, even Fonsi was impressed as we were told by the media as the song has been pushed for the past few days…

“Let our frat boy friend come to the party” they said, “he will act right” they said.

This morning I woke up to every American music as well as Latinx-centered publication in North America covering the latest of Bieber’s problematic antics. This time he was not chastising his young fans for being too loud, or not clapping the right way or being an overall insufferable douche to people. Today’s headlines read something like “Bieber forgets the words to Despacito while performing live.”

It is worth emphasizing that it is not either Daddy Yankees nor Luis Fonsi’s fault that they acceded to work with Bieber and he pulled this type of stunt. It is impossible to predict who is or isn’t going to be a fuckshit and those men are not responsible for this white man’s blatant racism against Latinx everywhere. After seeing the videos going around I am more shocked at the fact that no one thought to call it what it is.

To make a song with Puerto Rican artists in Spanish and not know, understand and memorize their words is an insult. It’s also telling of the type of artist this man is, you mean to tell me he can’t memorize a song? To do the onstage version of common edge-lord meme which is basically captioning anything in Spanish as “Taco Speak” is very reprehensible but not beneath anything Bieber has ever done. He has been problematic for years.

If you put aside the cultural appropriation, the edge-lord antics and contempt for fellow musicians you find a rich white man doing whatever he pleases at the expense of people of color. You have a white man bastardizing the Spanish language the language of that audience which he wants to access through this collaboration. It is the language spoken by the artists he worked with.

By no means am I here to defend the colonizer’s language: First People all across the continent spoke and to this day speak so many different languages. It is a fact that English, French, Spanish they were forced upon us and that original languages in some places were all but erased.

It is also worth emphasizing that it is not either Daddy Yankees nor Luis Fonsi’s fault that they acceded to work with Bieber. It is impossible to predict who is or isn’t going to be a fuckshit because they are not responsible for this white man’s blatant racism against Latinx everywhere.

At this time the last thing our community needs is ridicule for white entertainment, fuck Justin Bieber for real.
