The Great Remedy for Pride
[অহংকারে মহৌষধ — তারে বাড়া আছে ]
আর টাকার অহংকার করতে নাই। যদি বল আমি ধনী, — তো ধনীর আবার তারে বাড়া তারে বাড়া আছে। সন্ধ্যার পর যখন জোনাকি পোকা উঠে, সে মনে করে, আমি এই জগৎকে আলো দিচ্ছি! কিন্তু নক্ষত্র যাই উঠল অমনি তার অভিমান চলে গেল। তখন নক্ষত্রেরা ভাবতে লাগল আমরা জগৎকে আলো দিচ্ছি! কিছু পরে চন্দ্র উঠল, তখন নক্ষত্রেরা লজ্জায় মলিন হয়ে গেল। চন্দ্র মনে করলেন আমার আলোতে জগৎ হাসছে, আমি জগৎকে আলো দিচ্ছি। দেখতে দেখতে অরুণ উদয় হল, সূর্য উঠছেন। চাঁদ মলিন হয়ে গেল, — খানিকক্ষণ পরে আর দেখাই গেল না।
“ধনীরা যদি এইগুলি ভাবে, তাহলে ধনের অহংকার হয় না।”
[अहंकार की महौषध-उससे बढ़ कर है]
“फिर रुपये का अहंकार नहीं करते । यदि समभता है मैं धनी हूं, तो धनी भी उससे बढ़कर और उससे भी बढ़कर है । संध्या के बाद जब जुगनू निकलता है, वह सोचता है, मैं इस जगत् को प्रकाश देता हूं । किन्तु तारे ज्योंहि निकल आते हैं, ज्योंहि उसका अभिमान चला जाता है। तब तारे सोचने लगते हैं हम जगत् को आलोक दे रहे हैं। कुछ काल पश्चात् चन्द्र उदित हुए, तब नक्षत्र लज्जा से मलिन हो गए। चन्द्र मन ही मन सोचता है कि मेरी रोशनी से जगत् हंस रहा है, मैं जगत् को प्रकाश दे रहा हूं। देखते ही देखते अरुण उदय हुश्रा । सूर्य निकल प्राए । चांद मलिन हो गया-थोड़ी देर बाद फिर दिखाई ही नहीं दिया।
“धनी लोग यदि इस प्रकार विचार करें, तब फिर धन का अहंकार नहीं होता।”
[The great remedy for pride — there are others greater than you]
“You shouldn’t be proud of your money. If you think you’re wealthy, another is wealthier than you, and still others wealthier than he. After dusk a firefly comes out and thinks it lights the world. But as soon as the stars appear, its pride takes a fall. The stars then begin to think that they are lighting the world. After some time, when the moon appears, the stars are dimmed in shame. The moon then begins to think that the whole world is smiling because of its light, that it is lighting the world. But not much later comes the dawn. And then the sun rises and now the moon is dim. In a short time it is invisible.
“If wealthy people were to think this way, they wouldn’t take pride in their wealth.”
