A year ago, we went full STEAM ahead into the education realm with the release of Sphero SPRK Edition. Teachers applauded, parents cheered, and kids learned valuable skills for the future under the disguise of play. If it’s a SPRK day, it’s without a doubt the best day of school for any student. With the success of SPRK Edition, we decided to up the ante with a new and improved ball, plus we’ll be rolling out a few sweet features to our programming app this summer.

Powered by the Lightning Lab app, you can easily learn programming, complete hands-on activities, and share your creations with the community. Navigate a maze. Program a painting. Programming Made Easy
What’s new with the Lightning Lab app?
Simple for beginners yet sophisticated enough for experts, Lightning Lab empowers anyone to program their robot. The visual block-based programming app makes the basic principles of coding approachable and fun. We launched Lightning Lab in December of last year and are continuing to evolve with more exciting updates.
Coming your way in July is a new and improved version of the smart device app, featuring the integration of over 150 activities from the Lightning Lab desktop site. We’ve also upgraded the programming Canvas, adding programmable and sensor based sounds that add a fun, new dimension to coding. Programs will also be able to run while your SPRK+ robot is in the charger, so your ideas can last beyond the one hour battery life.
The addition of a news feed will highlight real-time activity on Lightning Lab, such as new posts, trending content, and comments to your contributions. With these improvements, Lightning Lab is becoming a more streamlined experience between app and desktop, as well as becoming an even easier social learning platform for anyone to enjoy.
So what’s the difference between SPRK+ and SPRK Edition?
SPRK+ upgrades include the addition of Bluetooth SMART to simplify connecting your robot to your device. Managing 12 or more robots in a classroom just got easier — all it takes is a tap to connect. Class time can now focus more on learning and less on setup. SPRK+ is also built with a strong scratch-resistant UV coating, so your robot’s shell stays shiny and new after use.
