How to play limit hold em, Daniel Negreanu

main lessons (substance starts at 2:25)

  1. Preflop: Always raise or 3 Bet if playing.

Example: Small pairs. If you are going to play 66 or even 22, then you need 3 bet. You want to play heads up or w/ 5 or more (to get value on set mining). They aren’t great w/ 3 or 4 players. If it’s AK vs 66, you are the favorite (slight) but you will probably get to river.

If you are going to play AJ and it’s bet in front of you, don’t just call, 3 bet! You want to take control. [NB: I don’t like to play such marginal hands unless solid read on villan).

2. Flop: play pairs aggressively (any pair)

Raise, Three Bet, or even four bet. Charge the draws if you lose to a set or two pair, you won’t lose much but over long run will make more from charging run.

In limit you want to value bet more and bluff less than no limit. Example of betting all streets w/ Ace High, especially in case of villain likely having a draw which misses on the river.

3. Flop — play Draws aggressively

If flop is Q86 and you have J9 you can check raise this flop if you are going to call one bet anyway with your open ender. Generally, it’s just one more bet so will be lots of villain chasers getting priced in.

4. Raise on turn and river — don’t wait for the nuts

Example turning two pair w/ a marginal holding like 8–6 playing from late position. Key to elite limit hold em is squeezing value turn and river. Thin value betting.

5. On the river, if you have anything you pretty much have to call. Even when you know your top or middle pair is beat, you just have to hope you are bluffing enough if it’s a sizable pot versus one bet. He suggests “don’t get bluffed at river” — when you lose the large number of bets you put in it’s hard to get it back and maybe it’s worth paying bet just to confirm your read even if you know you are beat. Not only will you make money from bluffs, but may deter future bluffs.

Bluff less, value bet more, be aggressive — play a wide range in late position but thin it out in early position.
