Tips For Becoming A Volunteer
Volunteering is a great way to gain practical experience (something which can be extremely frustrating when lacking from your CV), volunteering can also help you stand out from the crowd and learn practical skills which will make you more desirable to prospective employers.

Voluntary organisations are well aware that many people volunteer to gain experience, and as long as you can show your commitment and dedication to the cause from the outset, don’t be afraid, to be honest about your motives and use volunteering as a stepping stone to further your career.
Here are some tips for becoming a volunteer:
- Research about the cause or issues that motivate you or you will be happy by contributing to the cause.
- There are various NGO’s who work for educating children, help underprivileged children with basic necessities, providing food to the deprived section of the society.
- Consider what you can offer if you can spend some time from your busy schedule to do outdoor work e.g. teaching children, performing a cleaning drive, provide counseling etc.
- You have to look for a volunteering opportunity that is aligned with your objectives and goals of contributing to the society.
- Ask your friends or colleagues about their own volunteering activities.
- The Internet has great online volunteer referral services, including visiting your local volunteer center and these services can help you to find the right volunteer.
- Some colleges have partnered with NGO’s where they help them in carrying out volunteering objectives.
- Find the volunteer activity that fits your schedule. Organisations need different levels of commitment for different types of volunteer activities. Serving as a mentor, for example, will require a regular, intensive commitment, you might need to do a lot of field work or if you wish to work online or on social media.
- Volunteering can provide you with the chance to learn about something you’re interested in and develop skills in a new area. There are several NGO’s that offer digital marketing internship to prospective students and also guide them in executing the strategies.
- Interested persons can work on content writing, handling social media accounts, perform SEO and promote the NGO on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
- Don’t give up! If you find that your volunteering experience is not all that you expected, talk to your volunteer supervisor or coordinator about it. Think of what could make it better and check with them to see if your ideas are possibilities.
