Top eCommerce things you should know today — July 25, 2017.

  1. Google Parent Posts Strong Ad Growth, But Earns Less for Each Click. Alphabet’s quarterly profit fell by 28% because of $2.7 billion fine from European regulators. Alphabet said clicks on its ads surged 52% in the second quarter from a year earlier. But ads on smartphones and with YouTube videos generally earn less money per ad than search ads on traditional computers, the highly targeted ads that appear atop search results. As a result, Google said its revenue per click fell 23% in the quarter, the widest spread between the two metrics in at least six years. [WSJ]
  2. K.K.R. to Buy WebMD and Take Majority Stake in Nature’s Bounty. Kohlberg Kravis Roberts said that Internet Brands, a K.K.R. portfolio company, had agreed to buy WebMD Health Corporation for about $2.8 billion. Separately, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts said it would acquire a majority stake in Nature’s Bounty from private equity rival the Carlyle Group for an undisclosed amount. Carlyle would retain a significant stake in the company, which makes and distributes health and wellness products, like Nature’s Bounty, MET-Rx and Sundown Naturals. [NYTimes]
  3. Alibaba And Amazon: The Fight Is Just Starting. Amazon (AMZN) and Alibaba (BABA) are the kings of e-commerce in their home countries. As they have established a firm market position in their home turfs both companies are looking for new markets to expand in. [SeekingAlpha]
