Surviving (& Flourishing) In LA

Seeing as I’m a recent transplant to the LA scene, I’m still working on getting adjusted and gaining my bearings. Ever since I was little, I’ve done research and made lists in order to tackle the task at hand. My new move is no different. This month, I’m going to cover the survival tips I’ve found to help tackle my new city.
Get A Car
This hasn’t been too hard for me; since I’m from Florida, I’m used to driving. But, I will admit that LA driving is different than any other driving I’ve ever experienced. There are SO many drivers on the road at all times, that congestion and standstills are inevitable. That also means that people are doing everything under the sun while they’re sitting in their car. There are eaters, talkers, groomers; literally anything you could think of. So be careful when you’re driving in LA, you’re probably driving near a distracted driver.
Embrace Farmers Markets & Flea Markets
LA has some of the BEST flea markets and thrift shops in the country. You’ll find designer goods for fractions of the price, and one-of-a-kind handmade items that you’ll have just have to have. The farmers markets are no different. There is almost always a farmers market open somewhere in LA. If you’re new to the farmer’s market game, you can always rely on the Santa Monica market on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Warning: If you’re on a budget, be careful! The beautiful and delicious goods of these markets will easily burn through the money in your wallet. Be conscious of what you’re spending, and try not to make (too many) frivolous purchases.
Be Prepared to Talk About Yourself
It’s inevitable; the people of LA love to talk about themselves, and they love to know about the people whose company they are sharing. Be ready to talk about where you’re from, how long you’ve been in LA, what brought you here, and anything else you can think of. It may feel overwhelming at first, but the openness to discussion is actually pretty pleasant, and you’ll get to know people much more quickly than you thought you would.
