Tips for Modeling In Los Angeles

So….I MOVED TO Los Angeles!

It’s been my dream to move out of Florida to conquer California, and I’ve finally made the plunge. It’s exciting and wonderful, but now that I’m here, it’s time to work. My first order of business is going to be to look for modeling gigs, so I did some personal research on the do’s and don’ts of modeling in LA. I realized that blogging about it would be great for me to have something to refer to, and is also a great opportunity to pass on the knowledge to my followers! So, the following are some major tips for making it in the modeling business of LA:

Get an Agent

Representation is so important in this industry. The best modeling jobs are reserved for the models represented by the top modeling agencies. The first thing that should be tackled is finding the proper representation for yourself. Getting an agent can be done through your original agency or through referrals. If those connections don’t pan out, be sure to attend as many open calls with agencies as you can fit into your schedule.

Always Be On Time

This should go without saying, but it bears repeating. Punctuality is key in this business. Everyone knows that their time is worth money, so don’t ever waste anyone’s time. The rule of thumb is to show up to appointments 15 minutes early. Don’t show up too early though, because you don’t want to be an inconvenience to the staff. If there is any confusion about time, be sure to get clarification on time well before you are due to be there.

Be Camera Ready At All Times

This is a key difference between the East coast and West coast modeling scene. On the east coast, models show up to engagements fresh faced, unless they are working a job. This is not the case in LA. Models should be prepared to be in front of a camera at any given time.

Maintain Your Health & Appearance

LA is an adult playground; there will always be a some party or after-party event going on. Make sure that you don’t let your networking and event attendance take a toll on your physical appearance. Be sure to get plenty of rest and drink more water than you’d ever think was necessary. Make sure that your nails, hair, and eyebrows are always maintained. Don’t show up to events if you are visibly ill.
