TKZee performance at Stay Fresh Saturday Cape Town
I’ve been a fan since I was a toddler, but I just never got the chance to see TKZee perform live. When they came to Swaziland where I grew up, I was too young to attend the show.
TKZee is one of the greatest music outfits to come out of South Africa. They changed kwaito. Their brand of kwaito, which they called guz, had a strong hip-hop influence, both lyrically and sonically (put some respek on Zwai’s name, though). I used to memorize their lyrics as a child, and rap them to my friends. Magesh’s verse on “Shibobo” was my favorite.
My favourite TKZee albums have to be Halloween and Guz 2001 (as TKZee Family). I was also impressed with Magesh and Kabelo’s solo offerings.
Last weekend, I got to finally witness the crew performing live. Thanks, Head Honcho. I shed a thug tear, I experienced all emotions under the sun, in a space of less than an hour. One moment I was nostalgic, the next I was euphoric.
My elder brother can’t close his mouth about a TKZee performance he experienced more than 15 years ago. What I witnessed last weekend is exactly as he described it. The TKZee that wowed him 15 years ago, is still as energetic and passionate. They shut it down! They performed their yesteryear hits like “Shibobo”, “Magesh”, “Palafala”, “Masimbela”, “We Love this Place”, “Izinja Zami”, and a more!
Below’s a video of their performance.
