DRYA awards honor a great season

Steve Nadeau, owner of Brandilee, and crew display their season flags.

The Detroit Regional Yacht-Racing Association season flags were passed out Friday night during a dinner at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

Winners almost got IOUs instead of flags. Commodore Jeff Kitson said the flags, which had been ordered weeks ago, were apparently not even cut, much less assembled on Tuesday before the awards dinner.

But Barb Seski found another flag maker, Prestige Flags, that came to the rescue and got the entire order made in 48 hours.

In addition to the skippers’ awards, the Pontiac Yacht Club won the Sutton Trophy for the most improved junior sailing program.

A special award for supporting junior sailing went to the Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Educational Foundation, which supports junior sailing programs’ travel teams, high school sailing travel teams and offers $1,000 college scholarships to junior sailors.
