Lighthouse is actually moved to safer location

The Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard (okay, it’s not local but it’s still interesting) is one of the most endangered historic sites in the country and has been in danger because the cliff it’s located on is eroding.
Consequently the 400 ton, 52 foot high lighthouse is being moved — at a slow and careful pace of five feet at a time.
Ocean waves and groundwater were causing landslides that slowly ate away at the lighthouse’s base.
The project is being paid for by donations, and they could still use another $200,000 to pay for the move.
