I relate totally to your experience, as the same thing happened to me 34 years ago. It was well before there were lactation consultants to help. You just struggled along in your own quiet despair. Finally after six weeks of superhuman effort, buckets of tears and no weight gain, the pediatrician suggested I switch to formula. I’ll never forget the look on my baby’s face when she had that bottle and drank until she was, at last, full.

Thank you for telling your story. It feels like such a unique, personal failure but it is more common than people realize. This experience teaches one of the most essential truths of parenthood- maintaining perspective. Breastfeeding didn’t work out but the baby is still thriving on formula? That’s a WIN.
