Good point, Oscar!
Surely, ISO 8601 is a widely-spread technical format, but I’ve barely seen it in a regular life across all the countries that I’ve been to.
This article is about UX, that’s why 01.07.2017 is the most common format.
Hopefully one day we will have one standardized date format for all fields of life, and may be it will be ISO 8601, but I doubt so. Let’s be honest, there are pros and cons everywhere. ISO 8601 is very good for e.g. sorting files or events, but it has low readability.

Which one is better for sorting? Definitely ISO 8601
But which one is easier to read and understand for non-tech person?
