Sony To Create ‘Animated Millenial Universe’ After Emoji Movie Box Office Success
The Universe will feature films based on “Millenial pop culture” says Sony boss, Amy Pascal.
It may be hard to believe given the critical flop of its opening weekend, but The Emoji Movie (2017) was a hit at the box office. The film made $900,000 in its preview screenings and is projected to make another $20,000,000 by the end of the weekend. As it happens, kids don’t read reviews.
Following this huge success at the Box Office, Amy Pascal has already made am announcement today that The Emoji Movie will not be a one-off feature but part of Sony’s upcoming ‘Animated Millenial Universe’. She followed that “the Universe will continue the stories of the Just Dance and Candy Crush characters we saw in The Emoji Movie in their own respective films next year, and then moving on with The Fidget Spinner Movie and The Dab Movie in 2019.”
All of these films will eventually culminate in the 2020 film “Only 00s Kids” which will unite Gene and Jailbreak with protagonists from the upcoming films to defeat an as yet unannounced threat although Amy Pascal hints that “the threat to our heroes will come from an older generation that doesn’t really get them.” She was not referring to herself.
“We can’t wait to share some amazing stories with all those little suckers.” -Amy Pascal
Pascal ended by saying that she is “looking forward to all of the stories they’ll be able to create, especially because these films pay for themselves with licensing fees and the lazy parents who would rather sit their little brats in front of a screen for two hours than actually raise them”
With the release of The Emoji Movie, and this announcement, there is no doubt in my mind that cinema is dead and buried in the ground.
