Pearl Automation came out of stealth today to bring the latest personal technology to every car on the road. It’s an exciting time in the automotive arena, with all sorts of transformative technologies promising to change people’s expectations of what’s possible in a car.

Many are now looking to this new automotive frontier, including a diverse array of traditional enterprises, technology companies, universities and startups, all vying to capture a piece of this new market. It’s not often that Ford, GM, Google, Apple, Tesla, and others are mentioned in the same breath as innovative startups such as: Capio, Cloudcar, Cruise, drive.ai, nuTonomy, Otto, PolySync, etc.

We first met the Pearl Automation founders — Joseph, Bryson and Brian — back in 2014 when they were still in the early stages of formulating the mission and guiding principles behind the company. They had worked together at Apple over the years, but they led different teams and after each had left, they reconvened to do something together.

They’re an impressive group, having been the engineering and manufacturing brainpower behind the launch of numerous beloved Apple products. This team has collectively shipped a stunning 1 billion+ units, which they designed and built, to consumers all around the world. While we were struck by their pedigree, it was their confident yet unassuming nature that compelled us to dig deeper into their vision of building a cutting edge technology company in the automotive sector.

In a fast moving, dynamic, and still as-yet-to-be-defined industry, we appreciated the long-term ambitious nature of their vision, but also their well-reasoned pathway and logical steps for getting there. Today’s announcement is simply the first of those steps in the journey to make all cars safer, more advanced and more entertaining. And more importantly, to have them operate and behave just as we would expect from any other personal technology.

Pearl Automation’s first product, RearVision, is the world’s most advanced backup camera and alert system that installs in minutes. It streams super-wide, high-definition video of the area behind your vehicle directly to your phone. Behind the scenes, it connects to a system that uses cutting edge machine learning algorithms to learn and then improve. Subsequent feature enhancements are seamlessly delivered through automatic updates via the cloud. Needless to say, intelligent machine vision systems such as those in Pearl RearVision form the basis of a core building block for the autonomous driving (and flying) systems of the future.

We’re excited to unveil Pearl Automation, but this is only the beginning. To the journey ahead, Pearl Automation team. Let’s go.
