A reason to be spectacular
Most people are average. Most companies are average. Chances are, Im average. Because we interact with so many average experiences every day, all of us are expecting average from every encounter we have. And its the realization of this expectation that should make us strive for spectacular.
Since we anticipate to have an average customer experience, try out an average product and talk with an average customer service representative, being spectacular yields an unprecedented advantage for individuals and companies alike. An advantage that is guaranteed to last far longer than employing the newest technology or having an up-to-date skill set.
The advantage of being spectacular will never diminish, since too few ever realize that they should be spectacular. If you’re doing what you have been taught to do, what everyone else is doing, what your customers expect you to do, you’re being average by definition.
You might ask well, what is spectacular exactly? Being spectacular at anything (or everything) involves a conscious decision to realize that you are not. It involves an unbiased look not at “what did I do” but “what could I have done more”. It involves stopping to think before performing an act, designing a solution or solving a problem on auto-pilot, because thats the way things have been done. It involves measuring your success by asking “am I doing this 10x better than everyone else”, not just by “am I performing at the top”. And its exactly for this reason that few people will ever accomplish spectacular. Because its considered too hard. Since being spectacular involves striving to be 10x better, not just an inch, the barrier to trying is enormous.
In a world where all other advantages, whether based on intelligence, knowledge or technology are quickly vanishing, being spectacular is something that shouldn’t be underestimated.
So the next time you find yourself handling a situation with a customer exactly the way you’ve been taught or exactly the way everyone else does, stop and think “what more could I do” and be spectacular.
