Colorado Springs, Colorado — Sanborn Map Company, Inc. has been developing technical solutions to improve the 3D accuracy of Mobile LiDAR datasets to align with the precision accuracy specifications of Sanborn HD Maps for Autonomous Driving. Some advanced methodologies around localization for autonomous vehicles require point cloud to point cloud correlation referencing, employing mobile-based LiDAR datasets and on-board vehicle real-time LiDAR point clouds.

GPS degradation in complex urban environments causes absolute accuracy deficiencies to propagate into large-scale Mobile-LiDAR datasets. Sanborn has developed ways of improving the absolute accuracy of mobile LiDAR point clouds by tying down the the Mobile LiDAR datasets to the Sanborn HD Maps layers (constructed using a set of proprietary aerial technologies), which adhere to a standardized 10cm absolute 3D accuracy.
