Colorado Springs, Colorado — Sanborn Map Company, Inc.’s Advanced Technology team has completed the initial design of its proprietary geo-database for Highly Automated Driving (HAD) Maps. The program directive began in early October 2015 and work completed in January 2016 with version 1.0 authenticated and standardized for US markets.

The subject of geo-database schematic design and data layer standardization may seem dull and boring in relation to all the “exciting” technology advancements being made in autonomous driving space, but Sanborn understands the foundational importance of map data standards. As the Advanced Technology team began to extract road network features from various datasets consisting of aerial data (imagery and LiDAR collected from aircraft) and mobile data (imagery and LiDAR collected from ground vehicles), it became obvious that the team needed to construct a robust and comprehensive geo-database design from the ground up.

“The schematic design had to address every level of possible feature extraction for road networks — and that becomes very complex, very quickly, in respect to global markets. We knew we had to just dig in and concentrate on getting it right from the beginning, as everything else we were designing for autonomous driving map technology required it.” — John D. Russell, Director of Advanced Technology at Sanborn.

Sanborn called on a consortium of partners and customers during the construction phase and reviews of geo-database design have been “excellent” according to Mr. Russell.
