Enjoyed this piece on the logo the best of all I’ve seen!
Like you, I noticed it as a mobile icon change, and then I saw the .com soon after…I like this change with the “Medium” script, but I actually felt (like you) that the recently cast-aside logo was a great evolution of the platform’s branding into multimedia endeavors.
While classic, this new updated Medium identity feels old and rustic.
And for a company that’s into voice, video, and images now, “old and rustic” seem out of place for the new identity.
